Jack Butcher (b. 1988, Swindon, England) is a conceptual artist. He lives and works in Tennessee. He spent a decade in advertising before founding Visualize Value in January 2019.

Practice

He works with digital images, generative systems, prints and installations. He takes familiar forms, like a verification badge, a face or a receipt, and uses them to ask how a sign gains authority and how a transaction changes its meaning.

The work and its rules

Checks begins with the checkmark's changing status online. A collector can keep an edition or transform it through a system that combines and destroys tokens. Choosing what to preserve alters the remaining collection.

Opepen gives that relationship a different form. Artists propose images and collectors opt into sets. The image on a token comes out of a release process that involves several people, not only the first artist.

In Self Checkout, the amount a participant pays determines the length of a receipt and contributes to a balance displayed in the installation. An ordinary purchase becomes a physical, shared record.

The internet as subject and medium

The internet is a subject when a work examines its images, habits and signs of credibility. It becomes a medium when networks carry out the work: coordinating choices, recording a transformation or connecting a remote participant to a physical installation.

Ownership is one way of keeping that relationship active. In the Marfa interview published by OpenSea, Butcher describes how a person's continuing custody of an object allows a work to evolve through repeated interaction.

A practice with different forms

Not every project asks an audience to transform it. Work presents four silver hands moving toward the shape of a cursor. Checks Elements puts a digital composition beside its realization as a monoprint. Gas Wars uses aircraft simulations to ask what can be learned from damage and from examples that disappear.

Butcher spent a decade as a creative director in advertising. That is where the economical use of symbols comes from. In his AOTM interview, he discusses his route from design and advertising to working independently.

He spent a decade in advertising, working with brands including Amazon, Nike and Ferrari, before founding Visualize Value in January 2019. Checks opened on 3 January 2023 as a 24-hour open edition priced at $8, and 16,031 editions were minted. Opepen Edition followed, 16,000 tokens released through sets proposed by artists and chosen by holders.

His work has been shown at Art Basel Miami Beach (2025), Art Basel Hong Kong (2026), Paris Photo (2024) and Christie's, New York (2023). X Museum, Beijing acquired the physical installation of Self Checkout (2025), and more than 5,000 people collected its 5,837 receipts. Checks Elements #82 is in the LACMA permanent collection.
