Visualize Value is the ongoing body of images Jack Butcher started in 2019, before the studio became a school and shop. It is the source of the visual language in almost everything else on this site.
The method is reduction. Take an idea about value, leverage or work and cut it down to as few shapes and words as it can stand.
The images are black and white vector drawings. They use circles, lines, stairs and arrows, often with a short phrase set beneath. A small circle beside a large one, or a line that bends upward, carries the whole argument. Butcher has called the black-and-white format a chosen constraint. Later he separated images that explain value from works that run on it.
Joseph Kosuth's One and Three Chairs of 1965 set a chair beside its photograph and a dictionary definition, so the idea could be read at a glance. Otl Aicher's pictograms for the 1972 Munich Olympics made instructions legible without language. Visualize Value works between those two traditions. It is conceptual art's trust in the idea, put in the plain clothes of information design and distributed on a social feed.

A repeated visual language
The studio describes beginning with a daily public practice. The constraint is a method: reduce an idea to a small number of elements and let their relationship carry the explanation.
An August 2020 post describes the black-and-white vector format as a chosen creative constraint. In October 2024, Butcher distinguishes images explaining value mechanisms from later works powered by those same mechanisms. The two statements give a dated account of a change in method.2,1
The internet as a place to read and respond
The visual archive provides individual titles and images outside the pace of a social feed. Publishing online allows the work to be copied, discussed and encountered apart from the artist's original explanation.
That circulation differs from the programmed participation of Checks. A reader can reinterpret or share an image without changing a token's rules or an edition's supply.3
How the archive is dated
AOTM dates Visualize Value's beginning to 2019. The artist's later Economy of Words account says 2018.
VV Rare and VV Editions document later token-based releases. They are parts of the wider practice, not substitutes for its complete image archive.4,5
